Timeline of the Women's Initiative

1991

  • 4 of 50 partner candidates were women

1992

  • Deloitte & Touche Chairman and CEO J. Michael Cook established and chaired the Task Force for the Retention and Advancement of Women
  • First annual work-life balance survey is conducted

1993

  • Initiative for the Retention and Advancement of Women is launched in April
  • Ellen Gabriel is appointed National Director for the Advancement of Women and named to the Management Committee
  • Council on the Advancement of Women is created, chaired by Lynn Martin, former Secretary of Labor
  • Two-day gender awareness workshops are introduced

1994

  • Formal Flexible Work Arrangements and paid parental leave are introduced
  • First formal women’s networking event, the Executive Women’s Breakfast Forum, in Parsippany, New Jersey is hosted
  • Deloitte & Touche USA LLP  is named to Working Mother magazine’s list of “The 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” for the first time
  • Partner Implementation Network (PIN) is created to translate the concepts of the Initiative into hands-on activities in local offices

1995

  • Sharon Allen and Margaret Mulley named to the Board of Directors
  • Council on the Advancement of Women releases its first report within the organization
  • Annual Flexible Work Arrangements survey is instituted

1996

  • First Initiative for the Retention and Advancement of Women Annual Report is published
  • Survey on “Women at Work” is conducted in partnership with Yankelovich Partners and Fortune® Marketing Research

1997

  • Mike Cook receives Townsend Award, naming him Working Mother magazine’s “Family Champion”
  • Our organization leads the Big Six with the highest percentage of women partners/principals/directors
  • Seattle office delivers The Top Rung, an annual mentoring study and report on the role mentorship plays in the development of women executives

1998

  • Fortune© magazine ranks Deloitte & Touche USA LLP #14 on “The 100 Best Companies to Work For in America”
  • Deloitte & Touche USA LLP sponsors The Corporate State: A Women’s CEO and Senior Management Summit where women business leaders debate and discuss critical business trends

1999

  • Ellen Gabriel, partner and founding National Director for WIN, dies on June 19 after a long battle against breast cancer
  • Mary Ellen Rodgers is named National Director for WIN
  • Leading Edge, a leadership development program for women partners, principals, and directors, is introduced

2000

  • Sue Molina, Tax Partner, is named National Director for WIN
  • Task Force 2000 convenes to reassess cultural, retention, work/life, advancement, and leadership issues
  • Work/Life and Commitment Study is conducted to define the needs and priorities of our professionals

2001

  • National Development and Deployment Group is created to assist in the selection of new leadership appointments
  • Women’s Initiative Management Advisory Network (WIMAN) is formed to provide input and guide the WIN leadership team
  • Ellen P. Gabriel Fellows Program for leadership development is founded in honor of the first National Director for the Retention and Advancement of Women

2002

  • First Women Leaders’ xChange Conference for women partners, principals, and directors is hosted
  • Virtual Role Models site, highlighting talented women around the firm, is launched
  • New monthly Women’s Initiative News Flash is introduced

2003

  • Sharon Allen is elected Chairman of the U.S. Board of Directors
  • CPA Personnel Report annual “Survey of Women in Public Accounting” announces that we continue to lead the Big Four in percentage of women partners, principals, and directors

2004

  • Council is convened to review continued need and applicability of the Women’s Initiative; Research and data confirms need though recommends a refresh of the Initiative and supports vision for Next Generation of WIN
  • Cathy Benko, Deloitte Consulting LLP's High Technology Industry Leader, is named National Managing Director of the Initiative for the Advancement and Retention of Women and is appointed to serve on the organization’s Executive Committee
  • The next generation WIN vision is crafted to focus on “driving marketplace growth and creating a culture where the best women choose to be”

2005

  • Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space and CEO for Imaginary Lines, is appointed Advisor and Chair of the WIN external Advisory Council
  • Personal Pursuits pilot receives wide recognition and media attention as an innovative workforce program to stay connected to employees taking a temporary leave from the workforce
  • Women’s Initiative Senior Manager Advisory Council (WISMAC) and Women’s Initiative Manager Action Committee (WIMAC) are launched to guide leadership
  • Career customization pilots are initiated as first step in deploying an innovative mass career customization program

2006

  • After a successful pilot in 2005, Personal Pursuits is officially launched
  • ”Women as Buyers,” workshops that provide insight into how to build more effective relationships with female clients, is developed and piloted
  • Deloitte scored a perfect 100% on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, which examines and evaluates corporate policies affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees throughout the country
  • The Future Leaders Apprentice Program is announced. The program offers minority accounting students scholarship and on-the-job leadership development
  • The eighth Business Resource Group, Ability First, to support our disabled professionals, is created
  • The Deloitte Latina of the Year scholarship program is created in conjunction with the Women of ALPFA to recognize the winner’s academic achievement, leadership ability, and community involvement

2007

  • Mass Career Customization: Aligning the Workplace with Today’s Nontraditional Workforce is published by Harvard Business School Press
  • After extensive pilots, Deloitte begins rolling out mass career customization. By the end of the year, 20 percent of U.S.-based employees are participating
  • An All Inclusive group is announced. Barbara Adachi, Deloitte Consulting LLP, is named Managing Principal of the Initiative for the Retention and Advancement of Women; Allen Thomas, Deloitte  LLP, is name Chief Diversity Officer; and Stanley Porter, Deloitte Consulting LLP, is named National Managing Principal, Inclusion
  • Deloitte’s ninth Business Resource Group, the Armed Forces BRG, is created to support Deloitte professionals who are current or former members of the military, including disabled veterans
